Synonyms: Tympanis abietis P. Crouan & H. Crouan
Distribution:
Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized. Apothecia biatorine, rounded, (0.3-)0.6-1.2(-1.5) mm across, sessile on a slightly narrowed base, rarely substipitate, dark brown to black, with a concave to convex disc and an initially raised, but soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple to (23-)50-60(-80) μm thick at base, of radially arranged hyphae, pale to dark grey-brown in outer part, more or less colourless within, K-; epithecium with grey brown to dark brown granules; hymenium colourless to pale grey-brown, 50-60 μm high, I+ blue, K-; paraphysoids thread-like, coherent, more or less simple, 1.5-2.5 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cell up to 3 μm wide; hypothecium initially colourless, finally dark brown, gelatinous, almost pseudoparenchymatous, 80-95 μm high. Asci >100-spored, clavate, with a thick inner wall reacting I+ blue, an apical cap with a broad pore and an outer gelatinous layer reacting I+ blue, and a thin non-staining layer separating the outer and inner layers. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, globose, 1.7-2.5 μm in diam. Pycnidia abundant in sterile forms, subglobose, 0.1-0.4 mm in diam., dark brown to black, without ostiole. Conidia forming a compact gelatinous mass, pale brown, thin-walled, globose to pear-shaped, 2-3.5 μm wide. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a non-lichenised fungus growing on the resinous exudates of coniferous trees in rather shaded and humid situations. It consists of 2 phylospecies which are indistinghuishable morphologically (Mitchell & al. 2021). According to Roux & Coll. (2025) it is widespread and not rare in France. To be looked for in Italy.
