Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, dull brownish grey, rimose to areolate, the areoles developing on a dark hypothellus, flat to slightly convex, the marginal ones slightly elongate (but thallus not placodioid). Cortex of anticlinally arranged, cellular hyphae, the terminal cells swollen, with brown caps; medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, 0.2-0.3(-0.4) mm across, at first semi-immersed in the areoles, then sessile, with a black disc and a narrow, brown proper margin. Proper exciple thin, Aethalea-type, the inner hyphae hyaline, prosoplectenchymatous, the outer hyphae parallel and usually strongly brown-pigmented, N-; epithecium brown, N-; hymenium colourless, without oil droplets, c. 75 µm high; hypothecium dark brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type.
