Catillaria nubila (Norman) M.Svenss., S.Ekman & M.Westb.

Taxon, https://doi.org/10.1002/tax.70069: 11, 2025. . Basionym: Biatorina nubila Norman 804. 1870 - Öfvers. Kongl. Vetensk.-Akad. Förh. 27: 804, 1870
Synonyms: Catillaria chalybeia var. chloropoliza (Nyl.) H.Kilias ; Catillaria chalybeia var. velebitica Servít; Diplotomma nubilum (Norman) Szatala; Lecidea chloropoliza (Nyl.) Zahlbr.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, grey-green to dark grey-brown, 0.3-0.4 mm thick, rimose-areolate. Apothecia lecideine, 0.3-0.7 mm across, adnate or weakly constricted at base, with a black, slightly convex to flat disc, and a black proper margin. Proper exciple dark brown to brown-black, often colourless on the outer trim in lower part, without green pigments, N-; epithecium brown, without green pigments, N-; hymenium completely colourless, 40-60 µm high; paraphyses mostly simple, lax, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells capitate, to 5 µm wide, with a dark cap; hypothecium dark brown, K-. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, with a K/I+ blue outer coat and a K/I+ uniformly blue apical dome, Catillaria-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, oblong-ovoid to oblong-ellipsoid 8-12 x 2.5-3.5 µm. Pycnidia usually abundant, black, the wall dark brown. Conidia bacilliform, 3-4 x 1-1.3 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
Note: a recently-resurrected silicicolous species of the C. chalybeia-complex, closely related to C. baliola (both species without a blue-green pigment in the apothecia), but with a rimose-areolate thallus and a black apothecial margin, probably less hygrophytic than the former species. For further details see Svensson & al. (2025). To be looked for in Italy.
