Trapelia collaris Orange
Lichenologist, 50: 19, 2018.
Synonyms: Gallowayiopsis collaris (Orange) S.Y. Kondr.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, cracked-areolate, pale grey to green-grey, the young areoles with a brownish hue, often forming a coherent crust growing at the margin by extension and cracking of the marginal areoles, but sometimes the areoles gathered in smaller, more scattered groups, the marginal ones sometimes slightly elongated or crenate, giving a subplacodioid appearance to the thallus, the mature ones very variable in size, mostly 0.16-0.5 (-1) mm wide, convex or with several convex areas due to coalescence of smaller areoles; prothallus absent or very thin, whitish to brown. Apothecia lecideine, up to 0.3 mm across (rarely more), with a pinkish brown to red-brown, rough disc, a somewhat paler proper margin, and sometimes, especially when young, a thin, often incomplete pseudothalline rim; the apothecia often degenerate, with a new one initiated in the centre of the old one, so that the apothecium has a collar of pale brown, somewhat cartilaginous material. Proper exciple of colourless hyphae embedded in a colourless to weakly pigmented gel; epithecium almost colourless to pale yellowish brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses coherent, thin, densely branched and anastomosing, not thickened at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, unitunicate, thin-walled, the apical dome K/I-, or weakly K/I+ blue, Trapelia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 16-22 x 9-12.5 μm, thin-walled, with a perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: 5-O-methylhiascic acid (major), gyrophoric acid (trace).Note: on siliceous rocks, especially on small pebbles, sometimes also on soil. Known from the British Isles and France, but probably more widespread, having been confused with other species. To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks, soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
Pioneer species
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
