Trapelia involuta (Taylor) Hertel

Herzogia, 2, 4: 508, 1973. Basionym: Lecanora involuta Taylor - in Mackay, Fl. Hibern., 2: 134, 1836.
Synonyms: Biatora coarctata var. ornata (Sommerf.) Th. Fr.; Lecanora coarctata var. ornata Sommerf.; Lecidea coarctata var. ornata (Sommerf.) Malbr.; Lecidea ornata (Sommerf.) Hue; Trapelia ornata (Sommerf.) Hertel
Distribution: N - VG (Castello 2002, Martellos & Castello 2004), Frl, Ven, Lomb, Piem (Valcuvia 2002, 2002b, E.C.I, 1, 73: S- F162749), VA (Ravera & al. 2024b), Lig. C - Tosc, Laz, Sar. S - Si (Nimis & al. 1996b).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, pale grey (especially in shade) to brownish grey, slightly glossy to matt, areolate, without a distinct prothallus, the areoles arising singly, often growing radially or later mainly in one direction, becoming lobed and later usually developing cracks, the singly-growing areoles more or less flat, retaining their individuality until 0.7(-1.6) mm wide, after which they are difficult to distinguish from aggregations of areoles, the crowded areoles often remaining small and forming slightly convex, 0.2-0.6 mm wide aggregations; some thalli eventually forming an up to 0.6 mm thick crust of overlapping areoles, the primary ones then being indistinguishable, and the crust cracked into secondary areoles. Apothecia often absent or slow to appear, 0.4-0.8(-0.9) mm across, at first almost embedded within the areoles, then sessile, with a flat to convex, sometimes uneven, pale pinkish brown to finally brown-black disc and a brown, grey-brown or white-pruinose proper margin which in young apothecia is sometimes surrounded by an interrupted thalline rim. Proper exciple of colourless hyphae embedded in a colourless to weakly pigmented gel; epithecium almost colourless to pale yellowish brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses coherent, thin, densely branched and anastomosing, not thickened at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, unitunicate, thin-walled, the apical dome K/I-, or weakly K/I+ blue, Trapelia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, thin-walled, 19-24.5 x 9-12.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV+ whitish. Chemistry: 5-O-methylhiascic acid (major), gyrophoric acid (trace).
Note: on recently exposed siliceous rock or on brick, on small stones in disturbed places, boulders, and walls. The species has been frequently confused with the very similar T. glebulosa, and all Italian records should be checked against that species.
