Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, brown, verrucose-areolate, without a distinct hypothallus, the areoles more or less convex, 0.1-0.25(-0.5) mm wide. Cortex very thin, brownish; algal layer 10-30 µm thick; medulla poorly developed, the lowermost hyphae brown-pigmented. Perithecia black, c. 0.25 mm across, hemispherically projecting, covered with a thalline layer in basal parts, the apical part naked. Involucrellum reaching to base-level, c. 20 µm thick, diverging from exciple in lower part; exciple largely colourless; hamathecium of up to 20 µm long periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type, c. 65 x 25 µm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid or oblong-ellipsoid, 23-29 x 12-16 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
