Bull. Soc. Bot. France, 97: 171, 1950.
Synonyms: Verrucaria cinereorufa var. clauzadei (B. de Lesd.) Clauzade & Cl. Roux
Distribution: N - Frl (Breuss 2008).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, continuous, violet grey to grey with tiny brown flecks, often delimited by dark prothalline lines. Perithecia black, c. 70-80/cm2, 0.25-0.5(-0.6) mm across, 1/2 to 3/4 immersed in the rock and leaving deep pits when they fall off, the projecting part usually flattened to concave. Involucrellum 60-80 µm thick, dimidiate; exciple c. 0.25 mm across, dark throughout; hamathecium of periphysoids measuring 35-50 x 2-2.5 µm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, the wall not amyloid, not or only slightly thickened above, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (25-)28-35(-39) x 12-15(-17) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: this species, closely related to V. cinereorufa, grows on calcareous rocks in rather sheltered situations, with a wide altitudinal range. It has a few scattered records in Southern Europe, including the Alps (Nimis & al. 2018), and according to Roux & Coll. (2025) it is not very rare in France. See also Pykälä & al. (2020).
