Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, ochraceous yellow to pale orange, rimose-areolate, the areoles convex, uneven and knobby, forming orbicular to irregular, extensive patches delimited by an orange prothallus, the margins not lobulate (areoles becoming smaller towards the thallus margin). Cortex paraplectenchymatous, K+ purple-red. Apothecia zeorine, yellow-orange, often clustered, sessile when young but soon raised and constricted at base, 0.5- 0.8(-1) mm across, with a flat slightly convex, orange disc, a slightly raised, smooth, often paler proper margin and a sometimes finally excluded thalline margin. proper exciple of radiating, thick-walled, tightly packed hyphae; epithecium orange-brown, granular, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses somewhat moniliform, simple to branched, 1-2(-3.5) μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-16 x 5-8 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3.5-5.5 µm (c. 1/3 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ purple-red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).Note: a maritime-coastal species, often confused with F. marina, growing both on siliceous and calcareous rocks, known from the Atlantic coasts and also reported from Corsica (Roux & Coll. 2025). To be looked for in Italy, especially along the coasts of Sardinia.
