Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, forming 3-12 mm wide patches on the thalli of Flavoplaca maritima. Areoles 0.3-1.6 mm wide, 0.25-0.35 mm thick, polygonal to irregularly rounded, flat to convex, pale brown, the margin and lower surface often blackish, epruinose or faintly white-pruinose, the pruina consisting of dead cells. Cortex 7-11 μm thick, of 1-2 layers of pale brown cells, often covered by a discontinuous epinecral layer; medulla white, sometimes with a few large crystals, I-. Perithecia black, 0.1-0.17 mm across, globose, (4)7-30 per areole, almost completely immersed, visible as black dots. Involucrellum absent; exciple paraplectenchymatous, colourless except around the ostiole; hymenium colourless, I+ reddish; hamathecium of periphyses along the ostiolar channel and periphysoids in upper part of the perithecium, the paraphyses disappearing early. Asci 8-spored, clavate, bitunicate, with a thin tholus reacting I-, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled to 1-septate, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (11-)12-15(-16) x (4-)4.5-5.5(-6.5) µm, 1.8-3.3 times as long as wide. Pycnidia black, immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 4-5.5 x (0.5-)1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a rare species, hitherto known from the British Isles, France and the Netherlands, parasitic on the thalli of Flavoplaca maritima in coastal-maritime situations. For further details see Navarro-Rosinés & al. (2007). To be looked for in Italy together with host.
