Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, consisting of scattered to clustered, bright yellow, somehow glossy rounded to angular, strongly convex (but flattened or concave at top), 0.4-6 mm wide, up to 1 mm thick, marginally often striate areoles. Apothecia 1-20 per areole, at first punctiform, then expanded, round to elliptical in outline, 0.1-1 mm across, with a ochre-yellow disc and a usually poorly evident, thin thalline margin. Epithecium yellowish; hymenium colourless 120-150 µm high, the hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ light blue fading to light red; paraphyses 2-2.5 µm thick at base, the apical cells hardly swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 100-200-spored, clavate, the apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, globose or subglobose, 3-5 x 2-4 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV+ orange. Chemistry: rhizocarpic acid.
Note: a pioneer species of base-rich siliceous rocks in warm-dry habitats, usually growing on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered, sunny surfaces, known from the southern Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. To be looked for in the driest parts of Mediterranean Italy, especially in Sicily and Sardinia.
