Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, pale to medium brown, epruinose or rarely slightly pruinose, forming up to 5-10 cm wide patches, the central parts with at first adnate, then ascending, lobulate, subpeltate and subsquamulose areoles measuring 0.7-3.5 x 0.6-2.1 mm, the marginal lobes loosely attached, 3-5.5 mm long, 0.9-3 mm wide; lower surface whitish to dark grey. Upper cortex (25-)35-60 µm thick, overlain by a 2-6.5 µm thick amorphous layer; algal layer continuous in the central areoles, interrupted by hyphal strands in the apical parts of marginal lobes; medulla white, up to 100 µm thick. Apothecia developing on the central areoles, 1-9 per areole, 0.5-1.6 mm across, with a dark brown, multi-umbonate disc, a finally excluded thalline margin, and a rugose proper margin. Proper exciple thick, prosoplectenchymatous; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, 100-150 µm high, I+ persistently blue; paraphyses moderately branched and anastomosing, 1.5.-2.5 µm thick at base, the apical cells only slightly wider; subhymenium up to 38 µm thick, I+ blue; hypothecium colourless, 100-170 µm high, I-. Asci 100-200 –spored, clavate. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (3-)3.5-4.5(-5) x 1.5-2.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV-. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid.Note: a recently-described species related to A. rugulosa growing on iron-rich rocks, described from the Pyrenees and also known from the Western Alps (France, see Roux & Coll. 2025). To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
