Naetrocymbe cinereopruinosa (Schaer.) Lücking, R. Miranda, Herrera-Camp. & Campos-Cerda
Plant and Fungal Systematics, 71, 1: 200, 2026.. Basionym: Verrucaria cinereopruinosa Schaer. - Lich. Helv. Spicil., 7: 343. 1836.
Synonyms: Arthopyrenia cinereopruinosa (Schaer.) A. Massal. non auct.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, brownish grey (the colour of the bark), without a clear prothallus. Perithecia black, 0.15-0.3 mm across, hemispherical, laterally fused in groups of 3-5, basally slightly expanding and partly covered by a thin thalline layer. Involucrellum dimidiate, of compacted brown hyphae and bark cells, K-; exciple prosoplectenchymatous, orange-brown to brown in outer part, colourless in inner part, surrounding the centrum; hamathecium of short periphysoids and mostly simple, distinctly septate, not gelatinised, 1.5-2 μm thick paraphysoids; hymenial gel hemiamyloid. Asci 8-spored, broadly clavate to pyriform, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, with a distinctive apical region lacking a nasse, 45-60 x 15-20 μm. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, subclavate, the terminal cell rounded, the distal cell somewhat acute, lacking secondary constrictions, 14-17 x 5-8 μm (c. 2-3 times as long as wide), lacking ornamentations. Photobiont probably absent. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a very much misunderstood species. According to Thiyagaraja & al. (2021) most specimens identified as Arthopyrenia cinereopruinosa belong to Alloarthopyrenia italica. The species has been recently lectotypified, and is currently known only from the lectotype material from Switzerland (without locality). For further details see Miranda-González& al. (2026). To be looked for in Italy.
