Description: Thallus foliose to subcrustose-placodioid, heteromerous, dorsiventral, narrow-lobed, sorediate, white grey or grey, sometimes dark grey, green when moist, forming small to very small, 0.5-2 cm wide, sometimes confluent rosettes, the lobes 0.2-1.5 mm wide, irregular, contiguous, towards the centre often with transverse or radially arranged folds, laterally imbricate or with raised margins, broadest near the tips, strongly lobulate, the lobules often suborbicular or somewhat broader than long, with a shiny surface, sometimes the extreme margin darker in colour. the terminal ones mostly rimmed with a varnish-like, up to 0.2 mm wide prothallus; lower surface white, erhizinate or with very few hapters, ecorticate except at lobe tips. Soredia finely granular, becoming coarsely isidioid, arising from numerous, aggregated pustules, the soralia oblong or diffuse. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla white. Apothecia and pycnidia not known. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substsances.

Note: an epiphytic species of nutrient-rich bark, recently described from the Netherlands, with a probably western distribution in Europe. It is ecologically similar to H. adglutinata, from which it differs in several characters, such as the broader, paler, shiny lobes and the aggregate pustules giving rise to soredia. It should be looked for in Tyrrhenian Italy.
