Bacidia caesiomarginata (Kernst.) Lettau

Hedwigia, 52(3-4): 133, 1912. Basionym: Bilimbia caesiomarginata Kernst. - Verh. Kaiserl.-Königl. zool.-bot. Ges. Wien, 44: 216, 1894.
Synonyms: Bilimbia subtrachona f. obtegens Arnold
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, finely small-verrucose to granulose, grey-white. Apothecia lecideine, usually abundant, dull black but often bluish-pruinose, 0.5-1.2 mm across, sessile and constricted at base, with an initially urceolate, then flat to finally strongly convex disc and an initially thick and raised, often bluish-pruinose, finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple blue-black to brown in outer part, paler to colourless within, up to 70 µm wide laterally, of radially arranged, up to 2.5 µm thick hyphae; epithecium olive-brown or blue-green; hymenium colourless or pale brown, 50-60 µm high, hemiamyloid; paraphyses simple, up to 2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells capitate, up to 4 µm wide; hypothecium olive-brown in upper part, paler in lower part. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type, 40-50 x 9-12 µm. Ascospores (1-)3-septate, hyaline, cylindrical, 14-20 x 2.5-3 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 8-15 µm wide. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: unknown, but thallus probably without lichen substances.
Note: a rather poorly known species growing on more or less calciferous soil and terricolous mosses, more rarely on calciferous rocks in the alpine-subalpine belts, with several records from the Eastern Alps (Austria, Germany). To be looked for in the Italian Alps. The species might not belong to Bacidia in the strict sense.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks, soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
