Distribution: N - TAA (Bungartz 2004), Lig (Bungartz 2004, Giordani & al. 2016). C - Tosc, Sar (Scheidegger 1993).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, shiny, brown to dark brown, but the areoles often with narrow whitish margins, developing on a dark hypothallus. Cortex of anticlinally arranged, cellular hyphae, the terminal cells swollen, with brown caps; medulla white, I-. Apothecia black, cryptolecanorine/lecideine, 0.2-0.4(-0.5) mm across, immersed in the areoles, with a flat to convex disc and a thin proper margin. Proper exciple thin, Aethalea-type,the inner hyphae hyaline, prosoplectenchymatous, the outer hyphae parallel and usually strongly brown-pigmented, N-; epithecium brown, N-; hymenium colourless, without oil droplets, 40-65 µm high; hypothecium pale brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, broadly oblong, not constricted at septum, 9-11(-14) x 5.5-7(-8) µm, Buellia-type, with a smooth wall. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 4.5-7 x 0.5-1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow turning red (needle-like crystals), C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange. Chemistry: norstictic acid with connorstictic acid.
Note: on siliceous rocks in dry-warm areas, related to B. fusca, but chemically different, occurring both in the Mediterranean area and in dry-continental Alpine valleys.
