Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, forming separate to confluent, up to 2.5 cm wide rosettes, orange to reddish-orange, rarely ochraceous orange. Central areoles 0.2-1.4(-1.8) mm wide, flat to convex, often formed from lobe fragmentation; marginal lobes slightly contiguous or imbricate, deeply divided, flat, 0.4-3(-5) mm long and 0.5-1.5 mm wide at apex. Upper cortex with a brownish-orange external layer and a hyaline internal layer, scleroplectenchymatous, almost devoid of crystals; algal layer more or less continuous; medulla white, very lax. Apothecia pseudolecanorine or zeorine, often abundant, 0.3-0.8 mm across, rounded, scattered or grouped on the central areoles, basally constricted, with a flat, shiny orange to dark red, epruinose disc and a slightly paler, raised margin. Proper exciple 30-60(-90) µm wide, with radially arranged hyphae; epithecium orange-brown, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 60-90(-100) µm high; paraphyses septate, simple or sparingly branched, 1.5-3.5(-4) µm thick at base, the last 2-3 cells swollen and 3.3-8.5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, with a sclero-prosoplectenchymatous structure. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, (9-)11-14(-16.5) x (5-)6.5-8(-9.5) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (1.5-)2-3.5(-4.5) µm (up to 1/4 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ dark purple-red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin, fallacinal, emodin, and teloschistin.Note: a holarctic species found in the mountains of southern Europe, on limestone and dolomite, more rarely on base-rich siliceous rocks, most often at the top of isolated boulders in open, nitrogen-rich situations; especially common in the Alps and the Central Apennines, above or near treeline. For further details see Gaya & al. (2001).
