Description: Thallus crustose, grey to whitish, smooth to slightly warted, continuous to cracked, forming regular to irregular, up to 3 cm wide patches, rarely delimited by a pale to dark prothalline line. Apothecia common, lecanorine, sessile, 0.3-1.6(-2) mm across, with an orange to orange-yellow, at first concave, then usually flat, sometimes pruinose disc, and a smooth, persistent, grey thalline margin; proper margin very thin, usually indistinct in macroscopical view. Epithecium brownish orange, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 55-75(-110) μm high, I+ blue; paraphyses often branched in upper part, 1-1.5 μm thick at base, the apical cells 3-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, (9-)10-17(-20) x 5-8 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (3-)4-8(-9) μm, 1/3-1/2 of spore length. Pycnidia immersed, black. Conidia hyaline, ellipsoid to short-cylindrical, 3-4 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ faintly violet (most evident in thick sections under the microscope), C- or C+ violet, KC-, P-; disc of apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: thallus with the Sedifolia-grey pigment; disc of apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor).
Note: a holarctic, subtropical to boreal-montane lichen with optimum on smooth, mineral-rich bark (e.g. of Acer, Fraxinus, Juglans) but also on moderately eutrophicated bark of other trees, rare in polluted areas. In the complex of C. cerina s.lat. morphological differences among taxa are slight, while ecological and distributional differences are often remarkably clear. The treatment of this group is far from being complete, and it is still difficult to handle the nomenclature (see Šoun & al. 2011): at least some of the samples growing on plant debris are now segregated into C. stillicidiorum.
