Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident, or thinly episubstratic and finely rimose-areolate, whitish, ochraceous, brownish or grey, rarely delimited by a black prothallus. Apothecia biatorine/zeorine, sessile and constricted at base, round, (0.1-)0.2-0.5(-0.6) mm across, with an orange, brownish orange to black, often orange-brown-pruinose, mostly flat to finally slightly convex disc, and an initially thick and smooth, finally often excluded, at first orange, then often blackening proper margin; on the same thallus the apothecia vary from completely orange to completely black, the blackening usually starting from the disc. Thalline exciple sometimes developed only at the base of the apothecia; proper exciple up to 100 µm thick, the outer part corticate, the inner part colourless; epithecium pale violet grey, with a granular, yellow-orange epipsamma reacting K+ purplish-red, the non-granular parts reacting K+ violet; hymenium colourless, 60-120 µm high, not inspersed with oil droplets; paraphyses coherent, 1.5-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 2-4(-6) µm wide; hypothecium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, 60-120 µm high. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-17 x 4-9.5 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2-3.5(-5) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: Thallus K- or K+ faintly violet in section, C-, KC-, P-. Apothecia K+ red/violet. Chemistry: apothecia and sometimes thallus with the Sedifolia-grey pigment (blackened parts); apothecia with additional anthraquinones. Note: an (apparently) eastern Mediterranean species also known from southern France (Roux & coll. 2014), found on compact limestones, mostly coastal in Italy; probably more widespread in the Mediterranean Region than the few records would suggest.
