Kuettlingeria furax (Egea & Llimona) I.V. Frolov, Vondrák & Arup
in Frolov & al., J. Syst. Evol. 59, 3: 468, 2020. Basionym: Caloplaca furax Egea & Llimona - Collectanea Bot., 14: 266, 1983
Synonyms: Pisutiella furax (Egea et Llimona) S. Y. Kondr., L. Lőkös & E. Farkas
Distribution: C - Sar (Nimis 1993). S - Bas (Nimis & Tretiach 1999), Si (Nimis & al. 1996b).
Description: Thallus crustose-subsquamulose, dark ash grey to lead-grey, dull, episubstratic, 135-175 μm thick, developing upon a black hypothallus on the thalli of aspicilioid lichens, forming 2-6 mm wide, often confluent patches with a sublobulate margin, which tend to die in central parts, the thalli becoming ring-like. Cortex 27-30 μm thick, the upper part violaceous grey, covered with a hyaline, 14-20 μm thick epinecral layer. Apothecia zeorine/lecanorine, 0.4-0.8 mm across, usually numerous, at first immersed and clearly provided with a grey thalline margin, then subsessile and with a rather thick, persistent, bright orange proper margin, the disc at first concave, then flat to slightly convex, orange to orange-brown. Proper exciple orange, corticate in outer part, K+ red; epithecium orange-brown, K+ red, C+ purple, hymenium colourless, 80-90 μm high; paraphyses sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells slightly swollen, 2-3 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, often swollen at septum, (11.5-)12-15(-16) x 7-10 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 4-5.5 μm. Pycnidia immersed in small thalline warts. Conidia broadly fusiform to weakly pyriform, 2-2.8 x 0.8-1.2 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ violet (section!), C- or C+ violet, KC-, P-; disc and proper margin of apothecia K+ red, C+ purple. Chemistry: thallus with the Sedifolia-grey pigment; disc and proper margin of apothecia with chlorinated anthraquinones. Note: on isolated boulders of base-rich or lime-containing siliceous rocks, more rarely on compact limestone and dolomite. This taxon was included in Caloplaca conglomerata by Nimis (1993: 162), but it clearly differs in the parasitic habit, in several morphological characters (see also Roux & coll. 2014), and in molecular data.
