Description: Thallus mostly immersed in that of the host, sometimes visible externally as small, dark grey granules, otherwise reduced to the margin of apothecia. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.7(-1.3) mm across, at first immersed, then subsessile, with a flat to convex, brown-red to orange-red disc, and a thick, dark grey, finally sometimes almost excluded thalline margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous laterally, prosoplectenchymatous below the hypothecium; epithecium orange-brown, granular, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 70-85 µm high, amyloid; paraphyses often sparingly branched in upper part, c. 1.5 μm wide at base, the apical cells slightly swollen, up to 4 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (9-)10-14 x 5-7 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (2.5-)3-4 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecial disc K+ red. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; unidentified anthraquinones in the epithecium.Note: a holarctic, temperate to boreal-montane lichen, whose ecology and distribution are narrower than those of its host. It occurs throughout the country, exceptionally also in the Mediterranean belt, sometimes on walls, but, contrary to the host, is absent from heavily disturbed habitats.
