Caloplaca livida (Hepp) Jatta
Syll. Lich. Ital.: 247, 1900. Basionym: Placodium lividum Hepp - Flecht. Eur.: nr. 403, 1857.
Synonyms: Callopisma lividum (Hepp) Körb.; Caloplaca convexa (Schaer.) Zahlbr.
Distribution: N - TAA, Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, pale grey to whitish, very thin, continuous, often inconspicuous. Apothecia frequent, biatorine, rounded, sessile, strongly constricted at base, 0.3-0.5(-0.8) mm across, with an ochraceous orange to brownish orange, at first flat, then strongly convex disc, and a thin, concolorous, often finally excluded proper margin. Epithecium orange-brown, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless 50-60(-90) μm high; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (13-)14-16(-18) x (5-)6-7(-8) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2.5-3 μm, c. 1/4 of spore length. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ purple-red. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; apothecia with unidentified anthraquinones.Note: an arctic-alpine species found on plant debris and bryophytes overgrowing acid siliceous rocks, with optimum near and above treeline. The species belongs to Bryoplaca (Arup in litt.).
