Caloplaca spotornonis B. de Lesd.
Bull. Soc. Bot. France, 100: 177, 1953.
Synonyms: Caloplaca savonensis B. de Lesd.
Distribution: N - Lig.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, whitish grey, rimose-areolate or areolate, rarely thin and poorly evident. Apothecia irregularly rounded, 0.3-0.7(-1.5) mm across, with an ochraceous yellow to pale yellowish red, flat to convex disc, and a paler, ochraceous yellow, persistent proper margin; a thalline margin is sometimes visible at the base of young apothecia. Epithecium yellowish brown, c. 20 µm high, inspersed with granules, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 55-60 µm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, 12-20 x 5-7 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2-3 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ purple-red. Chemistry: thallus probably without lichen substances; apothecia with an unknown set of anthraquinones. Note: on horizontal to subvertical surfaces of non-calciferous schists in sunny situations. This species was synonymised by Nimis & Martellos (2008) with Rufoplaca arenaria, but according to Roux & coll. (2014) it clearly differs in the well-developed thallus, the ochraceous yellow apothecia and the somewhat longer spores. It is hitherto known only from Liguria and Southern France, and it probably belongs to Rufoplaca.
