Distribution: S - Si (Nimis & al. 1994).

Description: Thallus episubstratic, yellow-orange, forming up to 1 cm wide patches (but several thalli often confluent, covering larger surfaces), at first crustose-subsquamulose, with convex, sometimes lobulate squamules/areoles surrounded by a white to ochraceous prothallus, then minutely subfruticose, with globose to coralloid, 20-50 μm thick, often proliferating, isidia-like outgrowths. Apothecia biatorine/zeorine, yellow-orange, usually sparse, sessile or immersed amongst the granules, at first rounded, then irregular in shape, with a flat to slightly convex, rough disc, and an initially smooth and raised, finally excluded margin. Proper exciple fan-shaped, irregularly corticate, the medulla containing algae at the base; epithecium orange-brown, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 60-80 μm high; paraphyses 1.5-2 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 2-3(-5) μm wide; hypothecium colourless, of conglutinated hyphae. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 11-14 x 4-7 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-4.5 μm. Pycnidia immersed, the ostiolar region poorly pigmented. Conidia ovoid, 2-3 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ purple-red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).

Note: on calcareous rocks near the coast; hitherto known only from the type locality (Lampedusa). A very characteristic and easily recognizable species, to be looked for throughout the Mediterranean Region. The species does not belong to Caloplaca s.str., and according to Vondrák (in litt.) it could belong to Haloplaca.
