Candelariella coralliza (Nyl.) H. Magn.
Svensk Bot. Tidskr., 29: 122, 1935. Basionym: Lecanora coralliza Nyl. - Flora, 58, 6: 15, 1875.
Synonyms: Candelariella pulvinata (Malbr.) Zahlbr.; Candelariella vitellina var. pulvinata (Malbr.) Mereschk.; Lecanora vitellina var. pulvinata Malbr.
Distribution: N - Frl, TAA (Lang 2009), Lomb (Favero-Longo & al. 2023), Piem (Morisi & Sereno 1995, Isocrono & Ferrarese 2008), VA (Favero-Longo & al. 2006, Isocrono & al. 2008, Favero-Longo & Piervittori 2009, Matteucci & al. 2015c, 2015d). C - Sar (Nöske 2000, Nöske & al. 2000, Cossu & al. 2015). S - Si (Brackel 2008b).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, golden yellow, entirely consisting of 0.05-0.3 mm wide, at first subglobose, then elongate and finely branched-coralloid granules forming small, sometimes cracked-areolate, up to 2 mm thick cushions. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, 0.5-1.5 mm across, immersed in the cushions, with a flat to slightly convex, lemon-yellow or greenish yellow, rarely blackening disc, and a usually granulose, finally sometimes excluded thalline margin. Epithecium yellow, covered with an epipsamma of minute crystals; hymenium colourless, 65-80 μm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple to sparingly branched in upper part, slender, the apical cells 3-3.5 μm thick; hypothecium colourless. Asci 12-32-spored, clavate, with an apical dome which is I+ blue only in the internal, lower part, interrupted in the centre by an I+ paler blue strip, Candelaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, oblong to ellipsoid, sometimes slightly curved, 10-14 x 4.5-6 μm. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ weakly orange, C+ weakly orange, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with pulvinic acid derivatives.Note: a mainly boreal-montane to arctic-alpine, circumpolar species found on siliceous rocks, more rarely on lignum or even dust-covered bark in open habitats, most frequent in Alpine to subalpine pastures, on isolated boulders used as bird's perches; certainly widespread throughout the Alps, but overlooked, or subsumed under C. vitellina by Italian authors. The dubious records from lowland Tuscany and Latium reported by Nimis (1993: 193), are not accepted here.
