Description: Thallus crustose to subsquamulose, sometimes almost placodioid, episubstratic, of 0.3-2 mm wide, scattered to pulvinate, greenish yellow to orange-yellow granules/areoles which are sometimes arranged into small, shortly lobulate clusters. Cortex 7-15 µm thick, pseudoparenchymatous, of gelatinised hyphae with more or less isodiametrical, 2-6 µm wide cells. Apothecia common, lecanorine, 0.3-1(-1.3) mm across, with a yellow to orange-yellow, flat to somewhat convex disc and a thin to thick, entire to crenulate, persistent thalline margin, the proper margin often visible macroscopically as a thin, usually paler ring around the disc. Thalline exciple with a 15-25 µm thick pseudocortex of somewhat gelatinized hyphae with more or less isodiametrical, c. 4-7 µm wide cells; proper exciple to 80 µm thick in upper part, of radiating hyphae with rectangular cells, becoming shorter and rounded in the outermost 3-4 cell-layers; epithecium yellow-brown, granular; hymenium colourless, 55-75(-80) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, 1.5-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells up to 3.5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, usually with oil droplets. Asci (12-)16-24(-32)-spored, clavate, with an apical dome which is I+ blue only in the internal, lower part, interrupted in the centre by an I+ paler blue strip, Candelaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled to rarely 1-septate, hyaline, oblong to ellipsoid, 8-12(-15.5) x 3-5(-6.5) µm. Pycnidia sparse, up to 0.15 mm across, appearing as darker orange-yellow spots on the thallus. Conidia hyaline, bacilliform, 2.5-3 x 1-1.5 µm. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K- or K+ reddish-orange, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: calycin, pulvinic acid, pulvic acid lactone and vulpinic acid.
Note: a holarctic, almost cosmopolitan lichen with a wide ecological range, found on a wide variety of siliceous rocks, on roofing tiles, brick, and sometimes on bryophytes, lignum and acid bark, both in natural habitats and inside large conurbations.
