Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, 50-150 µm thick, smooth to usually rimose-areolate, beige, pale to dark brown or olivaceous. Apothecia lecideine, dark brown to black (the disc brown when wet), epruinose, round to irregular in outline, 0.2-0.5 mm across, with a flat, smooth to tuberculate disc and a thin, smooth, raised proper margin. Proper exciple thick, coherent in K, of branched, radiating hyphae, dark brown in outer part, straw-coloured within, K-, N-; epithecium brownish, K-, N-; hymenium colourless, 40-60 µm high, I+ strongly blue; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells abruptly swollen, up to 5 µm wide, with a dark brown cap, the pigment located within the cell walls; hypothecium colourless to straw-coloured. Asci (16-)24-32(-48)-spored, with a K/I+ blue outer coat and a K/I+ uniformly blue apical dome, Catillaria-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly fusiform, 5.5-7.5 x 2-3 µm. Pycnidia usually present, half-immersed in the thallus, the wall brown (K-, N-) in the projecting part. Conidia ellipsoid, 2.5-3 x c. 1.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells (5-)10-12(-17) µm wide. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: probably without lichen substances.Note: a probably Mediterranean species found on twigs and boles of smooth-barked trees and shrubs, especially along the coast in areas with humid maritime winds.
