Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident, rarely episubstratic and granulose, the granules corticate, 8-15 µm thick. Apothecia stalked, pin-like, 1.3-1.9 mm high. Stalk 0.06-0.09 mm thick, covered in a greenish yellow pruina, of periclinally arranged, medium brown hyphae. Capitulum 0.2-0.4 mm across, obovoid to broadly obconical, yellow-pruinose on lower side, the mazaedium well-developed, brown. Exciple well-developed, of periclinally arranged, brown hyphae; hypothecium obconical, dark brown, with a flat or slightly concave upper surface, of irregularly intertwined, dark brown, sclerotized hyphae. Asci cylindrical, distinctly stalked, formed singly, dissolving early, with 1- to 2-seriately arranged ascospores. Ascospores 1-celled, ellipsoid to short-cylindrical, brown, 6-7 x 3-3.5 µm, with a rough ornamentation formed by irregular cracks. Photobiont chlorococcoid, with globose cells. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; yellow pruina consisting of vulpinic acid.
Note: a cool-temperate to southern boreal-montane lichen found in bark fissures of acid-barked deciduous and coniferous trees in humid montane forests, more rarely on lignum. Known from a few stations from the Alps to the mountains of Calabria: probably overlooked and more widespread, but certainly never common. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
