Description: Thallus fruticose-filamentous, yellowish green, densely tufted to pendulous, with numerous branches arising from closely adjacent basal holdfasts and a few short lateral branches, often covering very large surfaces. Branches up to 10 cm long, in average c. 1(-2) mm wide, tangled and irregularly recurved, sometimes slightly flattened, ribbon-like and to 3 mm wide at base, subterete and often hook-shaped at tips, the surface smooth or more or less foveate or reticulately ridged, with elliptical to linear, paler pseudocyphellae. Paraplectenchymatous cortex absent; peripheral chondroid tissue well-developed, forming a continuous cylinder of variable thickness; medulla dense, without chondroid strands. Apothecia not seen. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K-, C-, KC+ yellowish, P-; medulla K+ yellow turning orange-red, C-, KC+ red, P+ orange-red. Chemistry: cortex with usnic acid; medulla with salazinic acid.Note: a mainly Mediterranean lichen found on siliceous, much more rarely calcareous rocks in coastal sites with frequent fog and/or exposed to humid maritime winds; widespread and locally abundant in the small siliceous islands (a stunted specimen in TSB is on limestone).
