Distribution: C - Tosc, Mol (Ravera & Genovesi 2012), Sar (Zedda & Sipman 2001, Zedda & al. 2001, Zedda 2002, Cossu 2013). S - Camp (Ravera & al. 2017).
Description: Thallus minutely squamulose, the squamules fragile, more or less elongate, 0.05-0.25 x 0.05-0.15 mm, scattered to imbricate, terete or slightly flattened, pale grey-green when dry, blue-grey when wet. Cortical cells colourless, distinctly papillate. Perithecia rare, black, globose to pyriform, superficial or partly immersed, often fissured in upper part, 0.45-0.8 mm across (in section), without involucrellum, the ostiole often papillate and somewhat eccentric. Exciple 120-170 μm thick, distinctly 3-layered, with an outer layer of rounded, heavily pigmented cells, a median layer of similar, but unpigmented cells, and an inner layer of elongated, colourless cells; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thin-walled, fissitunicate with a very thin exoascus, surrounded by a hemiamyloid gel. Ascospores strongly muriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, 60-85 x 20-30 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a mild-temperate species with subtropical affinities found on basal parts of old broad-leaved trees, on bark or amongst mosses, in rather open, humid woodlands, mostly below the montane belt; to be looked for further in Tyrrhenian Italy. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Data Deficient” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
