Distribution: N - Piem (Morisi & Sereno 1995). C - Tosc (TSB 31239), Sar (Giralt & Matzer 1994, Zedda 2002). S - Pugl (Durini & Medagli 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, continuous or finely areolate, whitish to pale grey, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Apothecia lecideine, sessile, brownish black to black, (0.2-)0.4-0.6(-0.7) mm across, with a concave to slightly convex, sometimes whitish-pruinose disc, and a thick, entire, usually persistent proper margin. Proper exciple 30-50(-70) µm wide laterally, I+ weakly blue: epithecium dark brown to brown-black, granular, the granules P+ orange; hymenium colourless, 60-80 µm high; paraphyses 1.3-1.8 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 3-5 µm wide, often with oil droplets; hypothecium colourless, 50(-100) µm high, without an underlying algal layer. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 13-16.5 x 6.5-7.5 µm, Physcia-type, with a poorly developed thorus and minutely warted walls, the ontogeny of type A (apical wall thickening after septum formation). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P-; epithecium and pruina of the apothecia P+ orange (acicular crystals). Chemistry: thallus with atranorin, epithecium with pannarin.Note: a mainly western species growing on the branches of broad-leaved trees (Quercus, Ulmus, etc.), mostly at low elevations.
