Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate-verrucose, the areoles up to 0.5 mm wide, pale grey, whitish or pale brown, sorediate, forming orbicular, sometimes confluent patches usually delimited by a conspicuous, sometimes fimbriate, black prothallus. Medulla white, I-. Soralia punctiform, developing from verrucose areoles, flat to convex, up to 0.5(-1) mm across, whitish, greenish grey to yellowish grey, with farinose soredia. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, sessile, 0.5-1 mm across, with a black to brown, epruinose disc and a thick, persistent thalline margin. Epithecium reddish brown; hymenium colourless, 80-100 μm high; paraphyses c. 1.5 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 4-6 μm wide, with a brown cap; hypothecium colourless, up to 100 μm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, broadly ellipsoid, 15-20 x 10-13 μm, Pachysporaria-type. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus/soralia K+ pale yellow, C+ red, KC+ red, P- or P+ pale yellow, UV-. Chemistry: atranorin, gyrophoric (with lecanoric and orsellinic), ovoic, umbilicaric and 5-0-methylhiascic acids.
Note: on hard siliceous rocks near the ground in cold-humid habitats, sometimes (but not in Italy) on walls, mostly below the montane belt.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
