Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thin to rather thick (30-145 μm), dark grey, dark brown or brown-black, continuous to minutely rimose, paraplectenchymatous. Cortex absent, but uppermost part of thallus with a brownish pigment. Perithecia black, sparse, 0.2-0.3 mm across, projecting, naked. Involucrellum very thick (115-170 μm in upper third), reaching the thallus base, 514-570 μm across; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; periphyses up to 45 μm long; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, ellipsoid to clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of a delicate rostrum. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 26-40 x 12-19 μm, in part halonate (fresh material). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: an amphibious species on frequently wetted siliceous rocks in alpine rivers and irrigated rocks. The type material is on granite, and was collected near a creek.
