Distribution: N - VG, TAA (Thor & Nascimbene 2007, Lang 2009, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Piem (Isocrono & al. 2006, Gheza & Nascimbene 2024), Lig (Ravera & al. 2022). C - Tosc (Brackel 2015). S - Camp (Nimis & Tretiach 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose-areolate in central parts, almost placodioid at margins, whitish to pale pinkish grey, matt, slightly pruinose, sometimes delimited by a whitish prothallus. Soralia frequent, usually arising at the margins of areoles, flat, pale green to pale greenish brown, irregular in shape, remaining small and not obscuring the thallus, with farinose, 20-30 µm wide soredia. Cortex c. 1-3 μm thick, poorly differentiated, of rounded cells; medulla white. Apothecia very rare, lecideine, 0.2-0.8 mm across, round, with a flat, brown-red to blackish brown disc and a thin, soon excluded proper margin, sometimes surrounded by a collar of disrupted thallus (pseudothalline margin) when young. Proper exciple of colourless hyphae embedded in a colourless to weakly pigmented gel; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses coherent, strongly branched and anastomosing in upper part, not thickened at apex; hypothecium colourless to very pale brown. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, unitunicate, thin-walled, the apical dome K/I-, or weakly K/I+ blue, Trapelia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 14-24 x 8-12 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ red, P-, UV+ white. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid.Note: on base- rich or slightly calciferous siliceous substrata, sometimes also on walls, in humid areas, with optimum below the montane belt; probably more widespread, but never common.
