Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thin, continuous or minutely granular, subgelatinous when wet, dark brownish green to grey-green, with pale green, at first discrete, then confluent soralia (in fertile specimens the soralia may be absent). Apothecia lecideine, dark grey-green, brownish grey or almost black, 0.3-1(-1.5) mm across, adpressed but constricted at base, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a thin, soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple of densely entangled, colourless hyphae embedded in a colourless to weakly pigmented gel; epithecium almost colourless to grey-green, N+ intensifying green, K- or K+ brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses branched and anastomosing, not swollen at apex; hypothecium almost colourless to pale brown. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, thin-walled, the apical dome K/I- or K/I+ pale blue, Trapelia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 7-14 x 4-6 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
Note: a boreal-montane to cool-temperate early coloniser of mineral acid soil, sometimes overgrowing bryophytes and plant debris, mostly in upland areas. Molecular data (Resl & al. 2015) confirm the hypothesis by Purvis & Smith (2009) that T. aeneofusca is just a morph of this species lacking the green pigment in the epithecium .
