Description: Primary thallus squamulose, persistent or evanescent, the squamules small, 0.5-2(-5) mm long, 0.5-2 mm wide, elongate and deeply indented, fragile, glaucous green to greenish brown above, white beneath, rarely granulose-sorediate. Podetia simple or sparingly branched, hollow inside, greenish brown to brown, 0.5-3(-4) cm tall, 0.5-1(-3) mm thick, with pointed apices or with irregular, dentate and often marginally proliferating, small cups, squamulose-granular to partly decorticated, the areas without cortex usually with corticate granules or squamules, most abundant inside the cups. Apothecia frequent, pale to dark brown, convex, rather small, usually forming glomerules. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thickened at apex, with a K/I+ blue tholus and a K/I+ strongly blue outer gelatinous sheath, Cladonia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid. Pycnidia developing on basal squamules and along margins of cups, subpedicellate, constricted at base, with a colourless jelly. Conidia hyaline, curved. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K- or K+ yellowish slowly turning brown, C-, KC-, P+ red, UV-. Chemistry: fumarprotocetraric acid complex, occasionally with low amounts of atranorin and zeorin.Note: a mainly temperate to southern boreal-montane lichen found on epilithic bryophytes, rotting wood and organic soil, most common in upland areas with siliceous substrata. Specimens with delicate podetia with cortex plates detaching from the surface were described as C. pseudopityrea, which is distributed in temperate-humid climates of the Mediterranean region (Ahti & Puntillo 1995). However, according to Burgaz & al. (2020), unpublished molecular data do not support the hypothesis that C. pseudopityrea is different from C. ramulosa, and all European record of the N American species C. prolifica should be included in the variability of C. ramulosa, and European records of C. prolifica should be included in the variability of C. ramulosa.
Growth form: Fruticose
Substrata: bark, lignum, soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
