Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous, 15-32 mm wide, attached by a central holdfast. Upper surface grey; lower surface pale to dark brown, with 30-70 µm thick rhizinomorphs which lack an inner medullary layer. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous, of anticlinallly arranged hyphae, 70-100 µm thick, hyaline except the brown outermost part, with an epinecral layer of air-filled hyphae; medulla white, 110-220 µm thick, I+ reddish brown; lower cortex 50-70 µm thick, hyaline except the brown outermost part. Perithecia black, obpyriform to globose, immersed, without involucrellum. Exciple colourless, except in the brownish upper part; hamathecium or periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-13 x 5-8 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
