Description: Thallus foliose to subfruticose, dorsiventral, grey to grey-brown, loosely attached, prostrate to erect or pendant, erhizinate. Lobes flattened, 0.1-0.5(-0.8) mm broad, rarely wider and up to 1.5 mm, narrower in apical parts, several cm long, linear, with prominent marginal cilia. Lower surface whitish, channelled. Upper cortex prosoplectenchymatous, of conglutinated, thick-walled, periclinally arranged hyphae, overlain by a transparent layer of similar hyphae; lower cortex absent. Apothecia rather rare, round, lecanorine, strongly constricted to substipitate, to 5 mm across, with a black, often faintly pruinose disc and a grey to grey brown, usually spinulose to more or less densely ciliate thalline margin, the cilia, when present, usually thinner than those on the thallus. Epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses branched in upper part, the apical cells more or less swollen. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, slightly constricted at septa, 30-46 x 12-22 µm, thin-walled except at septum (Physconia-type), ornamented. Pycnidia dark, semi-immersed. Conidia hyaline, short-bacilliform, straight, 3.5–5 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: an often misunderstood species, confined to beech forests in rather open but humid situations. It was described as a narrow-lobed form of A. ciliaris, and should also differ from that species in the spinulose apothecial margins (Esslinger 2007); the species has been often synonymized with A. setifera, which purportedly differs in the broader lobes. In Armenia I have collected abundant specimens with sparsely spinulose to densely long-ciliate apothecial margins, whose lobes varied from very narrow to fairly broad. I suspect that several, if not all records from Western Europe, including Italy, refer to narrow-lobed morphs of A. ciliaris; a molecular study of this problematic complex could solve the problem. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Vulnerable” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
