Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, continuous or finely rimose, dark grey, olive-green or olive-brown, delimited by a black prothallus and often forming mosaics. Apothecia lirelliform, simple and comma-like or most often branched, 0.2-1 x 0.08-0.2(-0.3) mm, black or brown-black, immersed in the thallus, with a flat to slightly convex disc, without a distinct proper margin, often surrounded by a whitish cryptothalline margin. Proper exciple much reduced, brown, often poorly evident; epithecium brown ot brown-black, non-granular, K-; hymenium colourless, I+ reddish; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, thread-like, 0.8-1 μm thick, the apical cells hardly swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical or cylindrical-clavate, fissitunicate, the apical dome with a short ocular chamber surrounded by a minute, K/I+ dark blue ring, the inner wall often K/I+ pale blue. Ascospores 4-6(-8)-septate, hyaline, spindle-shaped, straight or curved, (22-)24-28(-32) x 4-5 μm. Pycnidia black, immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 5-6 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: confluentic acid.Note: a mild-temperate to humid subtropical lichen found on vertical to rain-sheltered surfaces of hard siliceous rocks, rarely on smooth bark, at low elevations; to be looked for further in Tyrrhenian Italy.
