Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident, or thinly episubstratic and then rimose-areolate, sometimes reduced to a few whitish to ochraceous granules surrounding the apothecia, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia biatorine/zeorine, orange-yellow, (0.1-)0.2-0.8(-1.5) mm across, at first subimmersed, then sessile, with an orange, finely rugose, concave to flat disc, and a smooth, more or less concolorous (sometimes paler), at first prominent, then reduced margin. Thalline exciple present only at the base of the apothecium, rich in algal cells; proper exciple 30-50 µm wide, paraplectenchymatous in outer part, prosoplectenchymatous within; epithecium brownish yellow, c. 10 µm high, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 60-80 µm high; paraphyses simple or forked in upper part, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 3-6 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, the upper part inspersed with oil droplets. Asci (4-)8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, long-ellipsoid, (9-)10-13(14.5) x 4-6(-7) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 4-6(-9) µm (c. 1/2 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- (rarely K+ faintly red), C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: apothecia (rarely also thallus) with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a Mediterranean, recently-described and perhaps more widespread lichen found on horizontal faces of calcareous rocks in coastal situations.
