Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident or thinly episubstratic and then whitish to whitish-grey, continuous to rimose-areolate, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia zeorine, bright orange-red, (0.1-)0.2-0.8(-1) mm across, usually numerous, rounded or deformed by mutual compression, at first immersed and urceolate, then adnate to sessile and constricted at base, with a concave to finally slightly convex, coarsely orange-red-pruinose disc, and an initially thick, smooth, epruinose, finally reduced but usually persistent proper margin; a whitish thalline rim is sometimes visible at the base of the apothecium. Thalline exciple poorly developed, but rich in algal cells; proper exciple 40-100 µm wide, prosoplectenchymatous, thinly corticate and orange-red in outer part, the medulla colourless, of radiating hyphae; epithecium yellow-red, 8-10 µm high, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 60-80 µm high; paraphyses simple or forked, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 4.5-7 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)10-13(-14.5) x (4-)5-7(-8) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (3.5-)4-6(-7) µm (less than half of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: apothecia (rarely also thallus) with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997). Note: a Mediterranean, recently-described species found on soft calcareous substrata (incl. mortar) near the coast; locally very abundant, to be looked for throughout coastal Mediterranean Italy. The sample from Tuscany was collected at Porto Ercole, on coastal calcareous rocks.
