Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, grey-brown to dark brown, often with a purplish tinge, thin and continuous or incompletely and very finely rimose-areolate, the areoles to 0.7 mm wide (often smaller), irregular, mostly flat; prothallus often evident, dark brown, thin. Medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine to biatorine, 0.2-0.6(-1) mm across, adpressed to sessile, black, rounded, with a flat to strongly convex disc and a very thin, not raised, soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple poorly developed, brown; epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses weakly conglutinated, simple or sparingly branched in upper part, 1.5-2 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cell clavate, to 5 μm wide. Asci 8-spored, clavate, with a thin external and internal K/I+ dark blue cap surrounded by a thick K/I+ pale blue apical cap, and with a K/I- apical tube in tholus, Fuscidea-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 5-10 x 5-7 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.Note: on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of hard siliceous rocks in upland areas, present both in the Alps and in the high Mediterranean mountains.
