Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.8 mm across, with an expanded, reddish brown to dark brown, flat to slightly convex disc, a thin, persistent, entire thalline margin, and an evident parathecial ring. Thalline exciple corticate, with a few algae in the medulla; proper exciple paraplectenchymatous, dark brown in outer part, paler within; epithecium brown to orange-brown, with a sparse brown epipsamma; hymenium colourless, 50-60 µm high; paraphyses mostly simple, the apical cells clearly swollen, with a dark cap; hypothecium colourless. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 12-15 x 5.5-7 µm including the gelatinous perispore which tends to be markedly thicker near the septum. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a species with relatively small ascospores (< 15 µm long), found on calcareous rocks in upland areas, altogether rare in central and eastern Europe; the localities are in Austria, but not far from the Italian border.
