Ionaspis odora (Schaer.) Stein

Th. Fr. ex Stein in Cohn, Krypt.-Fl. von Schlesien, 2, 2: 151, 1879. Basionym: Gyalecta odora Ach. ex Schaer. - Lich. Helv. Spicil., 1, 6-7: 361, 1826.
Synonyms: Aspicilia odora (Schaer.) A. Massal.; Ionaspis chrysophana auct.; Pinacisca odora (Schaer.) Trevis.
Distribution: N - TAA (Nascimbene 2002, Nascimbene & al. 2003, 2007b), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), VA (Borlandelli & al. 1996). C - Sar (Herb. Nascimbene 4826).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thin and continuous or rather thick and rimose, greenish, olive-brown or pinkish brown, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia 0.1-0.4 mm across, semi-immersed in the thallus, with a flat, pale brown, orange-brown, pinkish brown or olive-black disc and a thin margin. Epithecium colourless to olive-yellowish, N- or N+ yellowish, K+ violet; hymenium colourless, 50-80 µm high; paraphyses mostly simple, submoniliform in upper part, not swollen at apex; hypothecium more or less colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the outer wall K/I+ blue, but the inner walls and apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 8-14 x 5-7 µm. Pycnidia semi-immersed, the wall greenish, K+ violet. Conidia short-bacilliform. Photobiont trentepohlioid, the cells 10-18 µm wide. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine, circumpolar species found on hard siliceous rocks, amphibious near mountain creeks. For the complicated nomenclatural history see the (accepted) proposal by Lutzoni & Brodo (1994).
