Description: Thallus leprose, episubstratic, of bright yellow, 0.15-0.2 mm thick soredia-like granules, usually well delimited and often forming orbicular to irregular patches to several cm in diam., sometimes with obscure marginal lobes, up to 2 mm thick; the central parts of thallus sometimes decaying, leaving only an outer ring. Medulla white, sometimes visible in places, of thick hyphae often covered in small crystals. Apothecia and pycnidia always absent. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ red, C-, KC-, P-, UV+ orange. Chemistry: thallus with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a mild-temperate lichen of steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of limestone and other calcareous rocks in humid, often shaded situations, below the subalpine belt.
