Description: Thallus leprose, entirely consisting of a soft mass of bright yellow soredia-like granules, usually well delimited and often forming orbicular to irregular patches to several cm in diam., sometimes with obscure marginal lobes, up to 2 mm thick; the central parts sometimes decaying, leaving only an outer ring. Medulla white, sometimes visible in places, of thick hyphae often covered in small crystals. Apothecia and pycnidia always absent. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ red, C-, KC-, P-, UV+ orange. Chemistry: thallus with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a mild-temperate lichen of steeply inclined to underhanging surfaces of limestone and other calcareous rocks in humid, often shaded situations, below the subalpine belt.
