Synonyms: Arthopyrenia rhododendri (Arnold) Dalla Torre & Sarnth.
Distribution: N - TAA (Hinteregger 1994, Nascimbene & al. 2007b), Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic to thinly episubstratic, whitish, yellowish white or whitish grey, without a clear prothallus. Perithecia black, 0.1-0.15 mm across, slightly immersed at base, hemispherical, solitary or in groups of 3-10. Involucrellum dimidiate, of compacted brown hyphae and bark cells, K-; exciple orange-brown to brown, c. 30 mm thick, surroundingthe centrum; hamathecium of branched, 1-1.5 μm thick paraphysoids; hymenial gel hemiamyloid. Asci 8-spored, obpyriform, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, with a distinctive apical region lacking a nasse. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, clavate with unequal cells, 15-22(-25) x 3-6 μm., surrounded by a 0.5-0.8 μm thick perispore. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on smooth bark of shrubs in subalpine heaths, to be looked for throughout the Alps.
