Description: Thallus crustose, thin, continuous to rimose, white-grey to green-brown. Apothecia lirelliform, black, solitary or in small clusters, straight or curved, usually simple, 0.5-2 x 0.15-0.25 mm, with a persistently slit-like, epruinose disc, and a raised proper margin. Proper exciple black, carbonized, extending below the hymenium, 20-45 μm thick laterally and 30-70 μm at the base, K-; epithecium brownish, poorly developed; hymenium colourless, 40-65 μm high, I+ reddish; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, c. 1 μm thick, the apical cells hardly swollen; subhymenium yellowish brown, 15-35 μm high; hypothecium black, carbonized. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the inner layer of the endoascus amyloid throughout, the apical ring hardly visible, Vulgata-type. Ascospores 5-6-septate, hyaline, fusiform, straight or rarely slightly curved, (16-)19-28(-34) x 2.5-4 μm, with a thin, sometimes poorly evident perispore. Pycnidia black, semi-immersed in the thallus. Conidia of two types: strongly curved and 9-18 x 1-1.5 µm, or straight, bacilliform, 3-5 x 1-1(-1.8) µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a widespread, but not common temperate species with optimum in humid forests, especially on Abies, but also on broad-leaved trees.
