Distribution: C - Tosc, Laz, Sar (Nöske 2000). S - Cal (Puntillo 1996).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, 1-3(-4) mm thick, grey to grey-brown, sometimes zonate, markedly papillate, the papillae isidia-like, 1-2 mm wide, bearing at the top an initially punctiform, then expanded and 0.7-1 mm wide, white soralium with granulose soredia. Apothecia extremely rare, immersed on the top of fruiting papillae, with an expanded, dark grey to blackish disc. Asci 1-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, 180-200 x 60-70 µm. Photobiont clorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla and soralia K+ faintly yellow-brown, C-, KC+ reddish brown, P+ bright red. Chemistry: fumarprotocetraric acid, plus variable amounts of succinprotocetraric acid.
Note: on steeply inclined to vertical surfaces of siliceous rocks in humid areas, usually below the montane belt; mainly Tyrrhenian in Italy.
