Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, homoiomerous, paraplectenchymatous throughout, the hyphae small-celled, 4-9 µm thick, forming a dense network, attached by rhizohyphae. Areoles irregularly shaped, 0.2-1 mm wide, c. 0.2-0.25 mm thick, contiguous, dull dark green to black, rarely grey-pruinose, densely covered by isidia-like granules. Apothecia at first immersed then sessile, 1 or rarely 2 per areole, 0.25-0.7 mm across, zeorine, with an initially punctiform, later expanded, reddish brown, somehow glossy disc surrounded by a thin, often pale yellowish proper margin and a thick, granulose thalline margin. Proper exciple 7.5-10(-15) µm wide, cupuliform, prosoplectenchymatous, thicker in upper part; epithecium orange-brown, 10-15 µm high; hymenium hyaline, (75-)90-110(-150) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses branched and anastomosing, with cylindrical cells, 2-3 µm thick, only slightly constricted at septa; hypothecium colourless, up to 40 µm high. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, with a rather thick, not amyloid wall, without apical amyloid thickenings, 65-80 x 14-23 µm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)15-20(-25) x 6-10 µm. Pycnidia immersed to slightly projecting, globose to broadly pyriform, 50-90 µm across, with simple conidiophores. Conidia broadly to narrowly ellipsoid, (2-)3-4 x 1-2 µm, produced terminally. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, of single cells measuring 5-8(-10) x 5-7 µm, surrounded by a gelatinous sheath which is yellowish brown near the thallus surface. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: on sunny seepage tracks of limestone, dolomite, calcareous sandstone and basic siliceous rocks, sometimes also on small pebbles and on walls, incl. those of mortar, from the lowlands to the subalpine belt.
