Distribution: C - Tosc, Sar.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, whitish, more rarely with a yellowish or pale grey hue, areolate, the areoles flat, angular, developing on a more or less evident black hypothallus, the thallus delimited by a black prothalline line. Medulla white, I+ blue. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.5(-0.7) mm across, at first immersed in the thallus, then subsessile, with a dark brown (paler when wet) to black, sometimes slightly pruinose, flat to slightly convex disc, and a crenulate to smooth, persistent to finally in part excluded thalline margin; proper margin often visible as a parathecial ring within the thalline margin. Epithecium reddish brown, inspersed with small crystals reacting C+ red; hymenium colourless, 60-80 µm high; paraphyses 1-1.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 3-4 µm wide, with a brown cap; hypothecium colourless, up to 100 µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, (11-)12-15(-17) x (7.5-)8-10(-12) µm, Pachysporaria-type, with thick, faintly warted walls and rounded lumina, the ontogeny of type A (apical wall thickening after septum formation). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P-; medulla C+ red, KC+ red. Chemistry: atranorin, chloroatranorin, gyrophoric acid, variable amounts of lecanoric and orsellinic acids.
Note: on hard siliceous rocks near the shoreline, but sometimes also found at some distance from the coast in the Mediterranean parts of Tyrrhenian Italy, such as as in Sardinia.
