Distribution: N - Ven (Nascimbene & Caniglia 2000, 2003c, Tomaselli & al. 2006), TAA (Nascimbene 2008b, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004). C - Umb (Ravera & Di Toma 2003, Ravera & al. 2006).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, grey-brown, dark brown or reddish brown, continuous to rimose-areolate, rugose, matt, the areoles rounded, flattened, smooth, contiguous. Medulla orange-coloured, especially in lower part. Apothecia lecanorine, usually abundant, adnate to sessile, 0.3-1.5 mm across, with a dark brown to black-brown, rarely pruinose, flat to convex disc, and a thin but distinct, smooth thalline margin. Thalline exciple 30-80 μm wide laterally, ecorticate, covered with an epinecral layer; epithecium brownish orange to red-brown; hymenium colourless, 80-130 μm high; paraphyses distinctly thickened (to 4 μm) at apex; hypothecium colourless or pale brown at base, inspersed with oil droplets. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 19-35 x 10-15 μm, Physcia-type. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; orange parts of medulla K+ purple to violet. Chemistry: chemotype A) medulla with skyrin, plus variable amounts of variolaric acid, Cinnamomea-unknown pigment, atranorin; chemotype B) medulla with 1-O-methylemodin or 8-O-methylemodin, plus variable amounts of variolaric acid, Cinnamomea-unknown pigment, atranorin.
Note: on soil, mosses, and plant debris in tundra-like environments over more or less calciferous substrata, with optimum near treeline.
